Quiet of the chestnut trees
(Excerpt from the poem)
Comrades, you know, remember
the lad was sleeping in a hostel chamber,
the rays took him asleep
and penetrated to his spleen and marrow.
When they woke him, and he began to weep
they whispered: "Hush! No tears... Wait till tomorrow.
Drink up your pomegranate juice,
and we shall see how things fall out,
and how the East will loose your magnetism,
and how in the West your nerves will begin to shout.
You see, there are new devils on this earth,
who missed no chance for their rebirth,
but neither Hieronimus Bosch, nor Salvador Dali
could imagine such monsters..."
The grass stands pallid on the Pripet marshes,
Chernobyl homes deserted, all amiss,
the sky with eyes wide open as it glances
will you try more deadly things, then, after this?
The roads to Kiev and Minsk have keen edges,
though not a single dangerous mine is seen...
The noisy hour of a war-time situation,
The quiet hour of peaceful evacuation...
No, on this earth there'll be no peace nor rest
while chief things from this century remain
not only soldiers dressed in war-uniform,
but ray-proof robes
protecting man from man!
What then, Dante, Shakespeare, and Dostoyevsky,
are your creations senseless, useless, empty,
since they had no effect?.. That's deadly!
They struggle, strike, and strive, but say,
what if the curses of your day
drove out alone your pesky devils?
What then, Dante, Shakespeare, and Dostoyevsky?..
I lose all faith in the power of the word,
in the power of the word my hopes will balk,
while not one nuclear shield has been deterred,
while for some reason they talk, and talk, and talk...
The left leg moves in a Moscow corner,
the right leg drags in California.
That's concrete fact. That's the word in the mind.
That's the measure of man, while the record's unsigned.
Remember that lad who slept in the hostel bed.
What will happen to him? Why, nothing he's past belief.
I know and believe they wanted better instead,
but time filmed his eyes
with radio-active grief...
